Upon registration, we can provide a translated marriage certificate in the language of your choice, certified with an Apostille.
How the Process Works
- Application submission. Both partners visit the civil registry office — no appointment required.
- Marriage registration. Once documents are reviewed, the marriage is officially registered. A registrar can travel to the couple's chosen venue if preferred.
- Marriage certificate. Issued on the same day. Additional copies are available at no extra charge.
- Translation and apostille. A certified translation into the language you need and an apostille on the certificate. The apostille is issued on the 8th, 4th or 2nd working day or on the same day, depending on the fee.
Required Documents
- A valid passport for each partner.
- No passport translation is needed if the passport contains a Latin transliteration of the personal data.
- Two witnesses.
- A document proving termination of a previous marriage, if either partner was married before.
- A document confirming lawful stay in Georgia.
- Foreign documents, other than identity documents, legalized or apostilled, with a notarised Georgian translation.
Conditions for registering a marriage
Under the Public Service Development Agency rules:
- marriage in Georgia is allowed from the age of 18
- a marriage is not registered if either partner is already married to another person, nor between close relatives, siblings, or adoptive parents and adoptees
- both partners file a joint written application, and registration through a representative is not permitted
- the marriage is registered in the presence of two legally capable adult witnesses
Registering a marriage without special ceremony services is free of charge. A marriage can be registered at a Wedding House, a territorial office of the Public Service Development Agency or a Public Service Hall.
A marriage certificate issued in Georgia is apostilled for use abroad. The procedure and fees are on our apostille in Georgia page. If marriage to a Georgian citizen is your ground for residence, the conditions are covered on our residence permit by marriage page.
FAQ
Can foreign nationals register a marriage in Georgia?
Yes. Georgia permits foreign nationals to register their marriage in any district of the country.
How long does registration take?
The entire process — from submitting the application to receiving the certificate — takes one day. No advance appointment is required.
Is a Georgian marriage certificate recognised abroad?
Yes. With an apostille, a Georgian marriage certificate is recognised in countries that have joined the Hague Convention. The apostille takes from the same day to eight working days and costs GEL 30 to 150 depending on the term.
Can we have a ceremony outside the registry office?
Yes. A registrar can travel to any location chosen by the couple — a restaurant, the mountains, or any other venue in Georgia.
How much does marriage registration cost?
Registering a marriage without special ceremony services is free of charge. Ceremony services, translation and an apostille on the marriage certificate are paid separately if you need them.
Can a marriage be registered through a representative?
No. Both partners file the application jointly, and registration through a representative is not permitted. Two legally capable adult witnesses must be present at the registration.
Does a foreigner's passport need to be translated?
Not always. The Agency may accept a passport without a Georgian translation if it contains a Latin transliteration of the personal data. Other foreign documents are filed apostilled or legalized, with a notarised translation.
